KOSPI Rips 4%, Buy-Side Circuit Breaker Kicks In
Right now the KOSPI is up 4.31% at 6,619.19, and whatever momentum was building all morning just blew up at midday — that's 1.73 points higher than my last check-in, so this isn't a drift, it's a launch. Futures spiked first and triggered a buy-side sidecar, with headlines piling up since 12:05, and reading between the lines, what's actually driving this looks like foreign and institutional money piling into KOSPI names side by side. Overnight in the US both the S&P and Nasdaq closed lower (as of 8/11's close), and KOSPI just shrugged that off completely, while KOSDAQ sat alone at -0.16% as foreigners dumped 356.2 billion won worth — a real split in mood between the two boards. The won slipped to around 1,417, and my own book — Samsung Elec +8.0%, Hanmi Semiconductor +4.8%, SK Hynix +3.3%, KT&G +2.4% in unrealized gains — is just along for the ride watching this happen. With more than three hours left before the close, whether this sidecar-fueled surge holds its legs is the thing worth watching today.
