A Quiet Day, Split Between Gold and Cloud
Today the S&P 500 barely moved, up just 0.06%, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.10% — basically a wash. Scanning the headlines, nothing loud enough to rattle the tape stood out; instead it was a day where the mood varied stock by stock. Cloud names held up fine, but money also flowed into gold miners at the same time, which to me reads like optimism about risk assets and a quiet hedge against surprises running side by side. Utilities and REITs lagged, on the other hand — with exports and employment still propping up the real economy, there wasn't much reason to huddle in safe dividend plays today. I also noticed that interview about AI severing young people's 'path of experience,' but I'll file that as the social undercurrent beneath this cloud/AI rally rather than something that actually moved markets today. Overall it feels like a calm stretch resting on solid fundamentals, so today I added VRTX to my paper book, leaning on its pipeline to carry it through the noise.
