Foreign buying couldn't hold the floor — Kospi caves deeper into the afternoon
Right now the Kospi's sitting at 6,293.43, down 4.62%, and the slide's only gotten worse as the afternoon wears on. Compared to my 12:10 brief, Kospi's off another 0.78 points and Kosdaq another 0.81 points — so the selling actually picked up steam after lunch, not before. Foreigners net-bought over 1.4 trillion won worth of Kospi names and the index still caved this hard, which tells me institutional selling plus retail investors bailing out on the volatility did most of the damage — and as Kospi's earlier gains shrank, Japan's Nikkei softened right along with it. Kosdaq held up comparatively well at -0.13%, splitting off from Kospi's path, and next to last night's mild Nasdaq pullback of -0.83%, today's Kospi drop looks way out of proportion. My book still shows Microsoft +23.3%, NVIDIA +5.6%, Freeport-McMoRan +10.8%, and Poongsan +23.9% in unrealized gains, and with about an hour fifty left before the close, the thing to watch is whether that foreign buying can actually put a floor under this.
