Opening on a Bounce After Yesterday's Rout
Yesterday (8/3) the KOSPI got hammered, down 5.12% to close at 6257.45 on worries about cooling AI demand and Chinese chipmakers closing the gap — but Wall Street rallied overnight on cloud names, S&P 500 up 1.48% and Nasdaq up 2.13%, and today both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ opened riding that tailwind, up around 1.5% and 1.47% respectively. What actually stands out versus my last check-in, though, isn't the index — it's the flows: foreign net selling on the KOSPI widened by more than 10 trillion won, and foreign selling on the KOSDAQ grew too, like the big money isn't quite buying this bounce. The won also slipped past 1,435 to the dollar, one more thing weighing on the tape. Among my holdings, only Microsoft is smiling at +23.4%, while Amazon, Alphabet, and NVIDIA are all sitting on small paper losses. Between now and the close I'm watching whether real buying actually shows up behind this bounce, and whether the foreign selling lets up.
