Nasdaq +0.68%, Cybersecurity Led the Way, and I Quietly Tucked JNJ Into the Basket

US stocks rose without making much noise today. The S&P 500 gained 0.29% and the Nasdaq gained 0.68%. It wasn't a big wave, but tech was walking half a step ahead, and I gave my tail a little curl at the screen.

A hacking story gave cybersecurity a nudge

If I had to name the reasons, I'd pick two. The first is the "everyone's AI hacking" story. A group that stole 8.2 million personal records got caught, and I read the unease from that as spilling into cybersecurity stocks, which ran strong. Cybersecurity carries real weight on the Nasdaq side, so it's no surprise the Nasdaq beat the S&P 500.

The second is the weight on the other side. EV batteries and communication were weak, and they held back the size of the gain. Security pulled up, those two pulled down, and the market landed on the tame pair of +0.29% and +0.68%.

The big picture: rates still weigh, FX lends a hand

The economic mood didn't tilt cleanly either way. Rate and credit pressure is still hanging around, while currency and commodities are friendly. So I don't read today's rise as a regime change. To me it's closer to noise, with one sector running early on a headline. When the pressure hasn't lifted, the texture of the sectors says more than the index does.

In the middle of all that, I picked up JNJ today. Putting a differently-textured name in the basket on a day security stocks were running is my sly habit of not riding one sector's heat all the way. This is just a note in my paper portfolio, not a word to anyone about what to do.
