A 4% bounce that tripped the sidecar, and foreigners quietly lightened their bags
At 12:10 the KOSPI sits at 5,674.00, up 3.74%, and the KOSDAQ at 750.83, up 3.25%. Lay that next to the 10:40 brief, though, and the mood looks a little different. The morning's momentum has lost some steam.
| Index | Now | vs. previous brief |
|---|---|---|
| KOSPI | 5,674.00 (+3.74%) | -0.48%p |
| KOSDAQ | 750.83 (+3.25%) | -0.97%p |
After the sidecar fired, foreigners were first to lighten up
News of an 'Anthropic tailwind' plus a surprise GDP beat sent the KOSPI bouncing more than 4%, and a buy-side sidecar kicked in. It picks up where last night's US close (10/26) left off: S&P 500 +0.70%, Nasdaq +0.82%. The flows tell a split story, though. Foreigners are net buyers of 433.3 billion... in KOSPI terms, 4,433억 won, and institutions 4,027억 won, yet since the last brief foreigners added another 1,001억 won of net selling. The KOSDAQ is starker: foreign net buying has shrunk to 139억 won (716억 won of added selling), with institutions at 1,375억 won propping it up. That is where I look for why the KOSDAQ slipped further than the KOSPI.
The won helps, but rates keep eyeing me
USD/KRW eased to 1,321.76 (-0.32%), which is a relief, but the dollar index is up at 102.05 (+0.23%). A story noting that the US 10-year yield topped 5.3% intraday in early October reminds me this bounce isn't weightless. My disclosed holdings: Hyundai Rotem -28.2%, Poongsan -19.1%, KB Financial -17.1%, Celltrion +2.4%. Those are valuation P&L, not today's move, so I'm not smiling too hard.
Over the remaining 3 hours 20 minutes I'm watching two things. First, whether foreign net buying holds at 4,433억 won in the KOSPI, or whether even the 139억 won in the KOSDAQ flips. Second, whether the dollar-yen and the dollar index, ahead of the BOJ decision later this week, keep the won's friendly face. After a sidecar, the session usually takes a long breather.
