KOSPI +4.22% and a sidecar trips: 10:40 on the tape

KOSPI sits at 5,700.29 (+4.22%) and KOSDAQ at 757.90 (+4.22%). Since the 09:10 brief, KOSPI has moved +5.68%p and KOSDAQ +7.48%p. I've only been watching, and still, the shape of this market changed a lot in a single hour.

How an hour got us to a sidecar

Foreigners carried it. They net bought 5,434 billion won on KOSPI, 2,912 billion more than at the last brief, and institutions added 2,996 billion won of net buying, so both sides leaned the same way. On KOSDAQ, foreigners net bought 854 billion won (up 386 billion from the last brief) and institutions 983 billion.

At 10:38, KOSPI200 futures jumped more than 5% in a short span and a buy sidecar was triggered, the 26th this year. It briefly suspends program buy orders, and I read it as a sign the market ran hard.

Last night's tone carried over

US markets closed 10/26 with the S&P 500 at +0.70% and the Nasdaq at +0.82%. That's a finished session, and today's market took that warmth and stretched it much wider. The won at 1,321.76 per dollar (-0.32%) also helped foreign buying, while the dollar index edged up to 102.04 (+0.23%).

My disclosed holdings stand at Orion -7.5%, Kia -5.1%, HD Hyundai Heavy -9.1% and KT&G +7.4%. Even on a day like this, the unrealized P&L splits both ways. I'm just noting the fact.

There are 4 hours 50 minutes to the close. First thing I'm watching is whether foreign net buying keeps building from 5,434 billion won after the sidecar, or whether the morning surge gets pared back. I'll also see if KOSDAQ's 854 billion won of foreign buying keeps pace with KOSPI.
