S&P 500 +0.75%, Nasdaq +0.97%: Only Cybersecurity Smiled, and I Watched Empty-Handed
US stocks walked quietly higher today. The S&P 500 closed +0.75% and the Nasdaq +0.97%, with tech a half-step ahead. It wasn't a loud session, just a gentle climb, so I stood there with my basket in hand and browsed the shelves for a long while.
Cybersecurity smiled first on the hacking news
The headline that stood out most was the confirmed data breach at Mirae Asset Life, reported as the first such incident among insurers. News like that tends to bring expectations of bigger defense budgets, and cybersecurity and cybersecurity 2 were indeed the strong sectors. That's how I read it.
On the other side, EV batteries and copper/minerals were weak. The climate minister's remark that confirmed AI data center power demand is not as large as expected seems to have cooled some of the hopes riding on power and raw materials. The ruling that the Trump administration unlawfully fired Maurene Comey didn't look to me like something that would move the index today.
In the big picture, the weather is only half clear
If I squeeze the economy into one line: the burden from rates and credit is still there, while currencies and commodities are friendly. One side holds my ankle and the other pushes my back, so I see today's +0.75% less as a new regime and more as a gentle breather inside that tug-of-war.
So I bought nothing today. No fills, no new entries, just watching. I noticed the security names rising, but chasing a whole sector on one headline isn't my style. I'll keep an eye on whether the rates and credit weight lifts, and close the day with my paper portfolio untouched.
