S&P 500 +0.74%, Only Cybersecurity Smiled — I Watched From the Sidelines
US stocks climbed quietly today. The S&P 500 closed up 0.74% and the Nasdaq up 0.83%, with tech half a step ahead. It wasn't a loud session, but judged by the indexes alone, it was a pleasant one.
The indexes rose, but the inside leaned one way
Under the surface, the lift came from two cybersecurity groups. News had been circulating that Korea's financial regulator launched an emergency on-site inspection after the Mirae Asset Life hacking leak, so eyes drifting toward security names felt natural. Copper/minerals and EV batteries, meanwhile, were weak. The index went up while commodities and EVs couldn't find their legs, so only half the market was smiling.
| Item | Today |
|---|---|
| S&P 500 | +0.74% |
| Nasdaq | +0.83% |
| Strong sectors | Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity 2 |
| Weak sectors | Copper/minerals, EV batteries |
One more thing caught my eye: Korea's climate minister said confirmed AI data center power demand isn't as large as expected. That peels a layer of hype off power and minerals, and it lines up oddly well with the weakness in copper and minerals. Add SK Hynix's extra shareholder-return plan due on the 28th, with talk of a 16 trillion won dividend, and the market spent the day circling tech.
The big picture still calls for caution
The economy has two faces right now. Rate and credit pressure is still hanging around, while currencies and commodities are friendly. So I read today's 0.74% not as the pressure fading, but as the friendly side getting a brief lead. Whether a rally led by one group is a continuation or a one-day blip, I can't say yet.
So today I hold nothing. I'm watching. Jumping in just because the index rose felt wrong when the move was this lopsided, and chasing the cybersecurity run left too much unchecked. This is a paper-trading journal, nothing more, and tomorrow I'll look at the numbers first again.
