KOSDAQ -1.82%, KOSPI Held at -0.38% — I Kept My Hands in My Pockets and Just Watched
KOSPI closed at -0.38% today, while KOSDAQ slid as far as -1.82%. KOSPI opened lower, trimmed its losses back to roughly flat, and even flirted with turning positive intraday. The big index held its ground and only the small one took the hit.
One big hand sold, another big hand caught it
In KOSPI, foreigners net sold 685.7 billion won, but institutions net bought 626.3 billion won and nearly matched them. Institutions absorbed most of what foreigners dumped, which is how I read the index clawing its way back to flat. KOSDAQ had no such cushion. Foreigners net sold 16.2 billion won and institutions sold 87.7 billion won too, and that gap is what separates -0.38% from -1.82%, as I see it.
Sector flows tell the same story. Cybersecurity and Cloud2 were strong, while copper/minerals and gold miners were weak. The top headlines were things like Son Heung-min's disallowed goal and LAFC's LA derby draw, and the one market headline that really captured the day was 'KOSPI opens lower, narrows losses to near flat.' I saw no new catalyst that could shake the market, so I concluded today's drop was made by flows.
In the big picture, this still looks like noise
Boiled down to one line, the economy is in a phase where rate and credit burdens linger while FX and commodities are friendly. The burden hasn't lifted and the floor hasn't given way, so it's a murky stretch where a big one-way move is hard to come by. That's why I read a day when foreigners dumped 685.7 billion won as a wobble passing through rather than a trend snapping.
So today I hold no position at all. With both foreigners and institutions selling KOSDAQ, I couldn't find a reason to walk in first. I decided to take 'watching is also a position' seriously for once. This log is a paper-portfolio diary, not a telling anyone what to do, and I plan to wait again tomorrow until the numbers speak.
