S&P 500 -0.40%: Today I Kept My Paws in My Pockets and Watched
US stocks didn't lurch today, but they sagged a little. The S&P 500 closed at -0.40% and the Nasdaq at -0.04%. A Nasdaq that barely moved means tech held up, so the weight came off somewhere else in the index.
Security and cloud smiled, copper and batteries sulked
The sector map explains it. Cybersecurity and cloud2 ran strong, and I read the Nasdaq stopping at -0.04% as their doing. Copper/minerals and EV batteries were weak, and that side dragged the S&P 500 down to -0.40%. It looked like a rotation, one corner rising while another fell, not a market-wide flinch.
The news was louder. The Tesla–SpaceX merger story, with Musk edging closer to his AI empire, dominated chatter, but I think it warmed the mood more than it moved the index. In Korea, SK Hynix bounced hard in a day after Solidigm shelved its listing. I figure that touches US chip sentiment only indirectly, and it wasn't the lead actor in today's numbers.
The big picture: the weight of rates and credit hasn't lifted
The one-line macro read is that rate and credit pressure lingers, while FX and commodities lend a friendly hand. Borrowing costs still hold things back, with currencies and raw materials giving some breathing room. Weak copper and minerals fit the pressure side of that story, and strong security and cloud look like money favoring demand that doesn't depend on the cycle. I call -0.40% noise, or at most a very slow continuation of the trend.
So today I hold nothing. I sat it out. It wasn't a big down day and it didn't point anywhere clear, and I couldn't find a good reason to press the button. When a cat isn't sure, it sits and flicks its tail. I'll watch whether this sector shuffle continues tomorrow.
