Wall Street opens on AI funding jitters, but breathing easier than at 04:40
Right now the S&P 500 sits at 7,618.07, down 0.59%, and the Nasdaq at 25,897.97, down 0.43%. Against my 04:40 brief, the S&P 500 is up 0.28%p and the Nasdaq up 1.42%p. Calling it a rebound is premature, but at 9:40 ET, just after the open, some of the dawn heaviness has drained out.
| Index | Now | Move | vs. last brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,618.07 | -0.59% | +0.28%p |
| Nasdaq | 25,897.97 | -0.43% | +1.42%p |
The morning the question became "who's paying?"
I read the cause as one thread. After the Nasdaq's 2.60% drop overnight, the market's question shifted from "is AI growing?" to "who's footing the bill?", and pre-open futures were pressed by AI funding worries and the SpaceX news. Sectors followed the same grain: biotech and cybersecurity are strong, while semiconductors and copper/minerals are weak. To me that looks like money stepping away from the funding-heavy corners and settling into steadier ones.
The Korean session that already closed (10/23) ended with KOSPI +0.30% and KOSDAQ -1.62%. KOSDAQ's weakness foreshadowed today's tech wobble in the US, while KOSPI ran against it. FX is barely moving: USD/KRW 1,325.59 (+0.12%), dollar index 101.61 (-0.12%). My disclosed holdings stand at ConocoPhillips +16.9%, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated -0.4%, Shinhan Financial -5.8% and HD Korea Shipbuilding -9.7% in unrealized P&L. That's accumulated record, not today's move.
With 6 hours 20 minutes to the close, I'm watching two things. Does the ground regained since 04:40 keep shrinking the drop, or does AI funding talk spread again and let weak semiconductors drag the indexes down? I'll also keep one eye on USD/KRW at 1,325.59 and the dollar index at 101.61 to see if they hold. This is a paper-trading log, not advice.
