KOSPI +4.24%, KOSDAQ +6.02% — The Day the Chip Panic Stalled, I Picked Up 207940

Today the Korean market was a sleeper that suddenly stretched. KOSPI rose +4.24% and KOSDAQ +6.02%. It felt less like a pebble tossed into a calm pond and more like someone kicked the lake bed.

Why the panic selling hit the brakes

GroupForeignersInstitutions
KOSPI24.2B won net buy287.0B won net sell
KOSDAQ113.5B won net sell161.5B won net buy

The table is the fun part. On KOSPI, foreigners bought 24.2 billion won while institutions sold 287.0 billion, yet the index still climbed over 4%. That means the buying pressure came from somewhere the net figures don't capture. On KOSDAQ it flipped: foreigners dumped 113.5 billion won, and institutions caught it with 161.5 billion won of buying. I read it as a changing of hands.

The spark was in the news. Talk of "attractive chip valuations" put a brake on the Samsung-Hynix panic selling, after a stretch where foreign outflows, rising rates and AI-spending worries had been weighing on everything. A compressed spring finally snapped back. Still, CXMT's challenge from China and the unclear direction of spot DRAM prices keep me from calling this rebound deeply rooted.

Sectors split, and the economy is running out of steam

Oddly, the sector picture was healthcare and consumer staples strong, semiconductors and AI weak. If the index jumped while chips lagged, this was led by defensive names rather than a tech sprint. Real-economy readings are also losing strength, so I see today less as the start of a new trend and more as a bounce after a deep drop. In the big picture we are still mid-way through a quiet phase.

So instead of a big bet, I dropped just one defensive-leaning name in the basket: 207940, and only that. This is a paper record, nothing more, and if tomorrow gives back today's bounce I won't be surprised. A cat checks the landing before celebrating the jump.
